Game 12 – ATLANTA THRASHERS

Tonight, Jackets Coach Scott Arniel decides to ride the hot hand as goaltender Mathieu Garon gets his second consecutive start tonight in Atlanta.

7:00pm EST, Phillips Arena

Fox Sports Ohio, High Definition

Count me among the surprised that Mathieu Garon gets the start tonight. Does he deserve it? Absolutely yes. The real question is; How will Steve Mason react upon his next start (presumably Saturday against Minnesota)? Hopefully positively. All players on the roster, but especially the goaltenders must begin to realize that this is about wins and not egos.

My biggest sigh of relief? No Chris Mason. Talk about a Blue-Jackets-Killer.

I am curious to see if any of the previous “rivalries” with former Blackhawks on the roster will come out tonight. Ladd, Eager, and Byfuglien have burned the Jackets before so I expect there to be special attention paid to those three.

Just read over the Thrashers line-up again… could you imagine if CBJ Brass had paid Ron Hainsey $4.5 mil to play on the 3rd pair?

If a tree falls in the woods – JACKETS WIN

CBJ 5 – ATL 2

For icing a line-up of mostly NHL hopefuls and a few of the less-talented veterans a win in Atlanta came as a mild surprise.

This post-game wrap-up won’t be very in-depth, because I, like all of you, didn’t even see the game. The best wrap-up I have seen has come from the Thrashers official website, where Ben Wright put together quite a few pieces of information, the best part, from an Atlanta perspective, is the “what you need to know” section:

Only four of the 19 skaters who dressed for the game were regulars in last season’s Thrashers lineup so it should come as no surprise that there were some communication breakdowns and sloppy plays as a roster full of newcomers and prospects did its best to mesh as a unit. On-ice training camp sessions have been heavy on scrimmages so far and lighter on drills and systems fundamentals, so Tuesday night’s game was really a chance for the coaching staff to see which players clicked and to find out who had been listening in practice.

The biggest surprise of the night comes via the score sheet, only one set of fighting majors was given! Mike Commodore threw down with Danick Paquette about midway through the first period.

On to the griping…

How challenging is it for an AP writer, the OFFICIAL Blue Jackets Website, the website of the National Hockey League, and the “Worldwide Leader” ESPN to correctly spell the head coach of a National Hockey League franchise??? Apparently very challenging:

Granted all 3 posted recaps are from the same AP story, but in this blogger’s opinion, that’s no excuse.

Much like DBJ called for from the players, I think it’s time for the media to STEP UP.

Pre-season game 1, Atlanta Thrashers

Merry Jackets-mas… well sorta.

I’m never one to get overly excited for pre-season festivities because so much of what will be seen, will only matter or have an impact, for very few people.

Then there’s the fact that very few pre-season hockey games are televised.

From Puck-rakers, here is the expected lines and roster for tomorrow night’s pre-season opener:

F1: Matt Calvert — Derek MacKenzie — Derek Dorsett
F2: Tom Sestito — Kyle Wilson — Mike Blunden
F3: Oliver Gabriel — Andrew Murray — Dan Fritsche
F4: Dalton Smith — Ben Guite — Kyle Neuber

D1: Marc Methot — Brent Regner
D2: Jordan Sigalet — Mike Commodore
D3: Nick Holden — Nate Guenin

G1: Mathieu Garon
G2: David LeNeveu

Extras: Mike Ratchuk, D; Cody Goloubef, D.

Mostly a group of “roster-hopefuls” that should spend most their season in Springfield. It will be very interesting to see what forwards Matt Calvert and Tom Sestito bring to the table as well as defensemen Brett Regner and Nick Holden can potentially provide to the blueline.

Pretty obvious that Howson and Arniel both want to see which version of Mike Commodore they’re gonna get this year. Also fairly certain that we’ll get a solid dose of Commodore until he’s either traded or shows Howson/Arniel all that he needs to.

Notably missing from this line-up is Nik Antropov, Andrew Ladd, Freddy Modin, Rich Peverley, Zach Bogosian, Dustin Byfuglien, Tobias Enstrom,  and Johnny Oduya.

The line-ups for both teams are missing some big names, and for good reason. On paper, this looks to be a typical “let’s make a statement” type of game where high-level players could be at risk and neither franchise wants that before the season starts.

The 21st night of September will have significant meaning to a few players after tonight

Either way, hockey starts tonight, huzzah!
