Game 18 – ANAHEIM DUCKS

ana

I really hope game 1001 is better than 1000 for the sake of Ken Hitchcock’s sanity.

The Jackets look to right the many wrongs from an awful night in Nationwide Arena on Wednesday. The Blue Jackets have won 1 of their last 5 home games and look to get back on the + side in that regard. It has been reported that Mike Commodore will miss the game due to conditioning issues, so will Sammy Pahlsson because he had his Bursa Sac drained, Google Image Search that at your own risk. Garon gets the nod in net giving Mason a few extra days to clear his head from the Red Wings loss.

Right now the CBJ’s stats are nothing to be proud of, nor do they matter when the team is in what seems to be a tailspin. Time to get refocused and set the world straight.

Game 17 – DETROIT RED WINGS

det

It begins tonight. The Jackets are in 1st in the Central, and would like to stay there for more than just the opening month and a half of the NHL season.

nationwide-arena

7:00pm EST Fox Sports Ohio… and its a big game, so that means NO HD

The Red Wings come in reeling from a 5-1 loss in Toronto and under much criticism from various press outlets. Both teams have not played since Saturday night and should be well rested. As mentioned yesterday the Red Wings will start goaltender Jimmy Howard in lieu of Chris Osgood (cue Ozzie chant). The Jackets must take advantage of him early and often and use their speed to their advantage.

100_1792

Of course there is the whole revenge aspect after getting swept last April at the hands of Detroit’s few people with jobs. The team and the coaches will downplay it, but the fans sure as hell won’t. I would not be surprised to see an attempted octopus launch tonight… makes me wish I had enough money to sit lower bowl every game. On top of it all Ken Hitchcock will coach his 1000th NHL game tonight. Congrats!

Statistical Comparison

Columbus Power Play 22.2% (9th) vs. 75.9% (26th)Detroit Penalty Kill

Detroit Power Play 20.0% (16th) vs. 79.4% (18th) Columbus Penalty Kill

Just like tonight is the first time the Jackets have been ahead in the standings when these two rivals met, this is probably also the first time the CBJ rank better than the Wings in each special team category. The question is, do the Red Wings start to “get right” tonight against a much younger Blue Jackets squad?

Columbus Goals/game 3.19 (7th) vs. 3.07 (24th) Detroit Goals Against/game

Detroit Goals/game 2.80 (15th) vs. 3.25 (27th) Columbus Goals Against/game

Both defensively weak teams in the early season, but the Jackets will ice their best defensive corps of the season for only the second time all year.

Jackets in the News

voracek

The Blue Jackets are in the news today and thankfully none of it has to do with the finances of the organization or other potentially negative press. There is a great article featured on The Hockey News about one of the CBJ’s sophomores Jake Voracek. Here’s an excerpt:

The summer program Hitchcock talked involved a few Blue Jackets in California, a place – and lifestyle – Voracek took to immediately.

“I went out there to see how he was doing and he said he’d come by and see me for a visit,” Hitchcock recalled. “We had dinner together and I didn’t even recognize him, his hair was so long. He was definitely enjoying the California lifestyle.”

Voracek’s hair has taken on a life of its own. It’s like a good Canadian hockey mullet, but Czeched-out Jaromir Jagr-style, which is why it’s being called the ‘Kladno Cut,’ the city Voracek and Jagr both hail from. (See Aaron Portzline’s blog for more on the hair and Voracek’s musical tastes.)

Jackets’ defenseman Jan Hejda was featured on NHL.com in a Central Division Focused article. The article speaks to how Hejda came to find his home in Columbus:

He offered Jan the same contract package the Oilers told him they would make with him by mid-July. But there was a very big difference between the two offers. Edmonton’s proposal was just a promise that something would be done in the next week or so. Howson’s offer to Hejda and his agent was guaranteed money right there in front of them.

Another difference; the Jackets’ offer was good for only the next three hours. Five hours later, Hejda’s agent called Howson back and said if the deal was still on the table they’d take it. That was on July 5, 2007 — and it’s a date that the Columbus GM often looks back on and wonders how lucky he was to get this defenseman under contract.

Tomorrow’s a big day for lots of reasons, but it should be known that Aaron Portzline reported that the Red Wings will start Goaltender Jimmy Howard in Nationwide Arena… I’m not sure why, but I feel like a kid on Christmas right now.

No Trap Here – JACKETS WIN

CAR 2 – CBJ 3

For two periods it looked as if the Blue Jackets were going to lose to a depleted team who happens to be dead last in the NHL with 7 points. Thankfully it only took about 2:30 for Nikita Filatov, Jared Boll, and Rick Nash to score the Jackets’ 3 goals of the game and coast to another win.

ward blood car

Certainly a scary moment in Nationwide last night. Rick Nash went to the goal with the puck on his stick and cut across the crease slicing Goaltender Cam Ward’s left leg resulting in the above image. Yes that’s blood on the ice, it was fairly gruesome and shocking.

Carolina goaltender Cam Ward had surgery late Saturday or early Sunday at Riverside Methodist Hospital to repair a lacerated muscle in his left thigh, The Dispatch has learned

Puck-rakers

The Blue Jackets then proceeded to give up the opening goal, per usual and trailed the lowly Hurricanes after two periods completed. In that span Jackets’ Goaltender Steve Mason was able to stand tall and keep the deficit within reason for the Columbus offense to overcome. The Canes’ had an extended 5-3 advantage and three other power plays to try and top the Jackets, but were unable to capitalize as the presence of Jan Hejda and Mike Commodore in the lineup for the first time was apparent.

boll goal car

Do not adjust your computer monitors… that is indeed CBJ Winger/Fighter Jared Boll going to the net and SCORING A GOAL. The scoring explosion started with a nice one timer from Nikita Filatov followed two minutes later by the above beauty from Boll. Barely 30 seconds after Boll scored, Rick Nash took the puck to the net scoring his 11th of the season, giving him 11-11-22 in only 16 games… that puts him on pace for 113 points this season, yowza.

Bring on the Wings…

Game 16 – CAROLINA HURRICANES

A below average post for a below average opponent…

nationwide-arena

7:00pm EST Fox Sports Ohio (HD)

The Blue Jackets defensive corps will be at its best so far this season with the first presence of both Hejda and Commodore on the ice. Of course there is a caveat, Kris Russel has come down with the flu and will not be in the line-up tonight. The Hurricanes come in on the ropes losing 11 straight games and searching for answers. On the other hand the Blue Jackets come in starting to play much more sound in Ken Hitchcock’s style. On a side note the Blue Jackets look to remain undefeated on Saturday night after going 4-0 during the month of October.

Statistical Breakdown

Columbus Power Play 23.3% (8th) vs. Carolina Penalty Kill 80.3% (16th)

Carolina Power Play 13.4% (28th)vs. Columbus Penalty Kill 77.9% (21st)

If the CBJ Penalty Killers can’t get right against the Canes’ man advantage, then there may be no hope for them being as outstanding as they started this season. On the other hand it seems that the Blue Jackets may finally be able to count on their power play for a goal per game, or in a clutch situation.

Columbus Goals/game 3.20 (8th) vs. Carolina Goals against/game 3.60 (29th)

Carolina Goals/game 1.93 (29th) vs. Columbus Goals against/game 3.33 (27th)

A big game tonight that the Blue Jackets should win and need to win. Good teams beat the teams they should and are competitive against the best, inconsistent teams lose ones like tonight and hang with the toughies. We’ll get a real idea for how much the Jackets mental toughness has improved over the last couple weeks.

Game 15 – ATLANTA THRASHERS

This has to be a lame-o preview as I am stuck on the school internet at parent teacher conferences. As a band director, I don’t get many if any people needing to come talk to me except for the really hands-on parents who do everything right.

Anyway, the Jackets went toe-to-toe last night with (in my opinion) the best team in the National Hockey League. Unfortunately it didn’t result in a victory for the Blue Jackets, instead it went to the trivial skills competition that the Sharks were able to win when Dan Boyle got one past Steve Mason. Before I go on further, I cannot say enough about the recent turnaround that Mase has had. The poise, confidence and skill is all back and roaring, and has been on an upward trend beginning with the shootout loss to the Penguins. That being said, Mason will get a much deserved break tonight in lieu of Garon getting his 3rd start of the season. Let’s see, 3rd start, 15th game, so about 1 start every five games, but that will surely be different down the stretch or if Mason begins to struggle or on the other hand gets very hot.

Statistical Comparison:

Columbus Power Play 24.1% (7th) vs. Atlanta Penalty Kill 83.3% (8th)

Atlanta Power Play 27.5% (3rd) vs. Columbus Penalty Kill 78.3% (21st)

For the second night in a row the Jackets face a very talented team in both facets of the special teams. While this is no slight on the Thrashers you have to wonder what effect on the numbers playing in the Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference has on the statistics.

Columbus Goals/Game 3.14 (10th) vs. Atlanta Goals Against/Game 2.91 (16th)

Atlanta Goals/Game 3.54 (2nd) vs. Columbus Goals Against/Game 3.36 (27th)

The Jackets took a step in the right direction last night giving up only 2 goals against one of the most talented teams in the NHL. It will take another large effort to get the same result tonight in Atlanta.

Game 14 – SAN JOSE SHARKS

san-jose-sharks

Here we go, the Jackets are starting to play better, they get a much need 3 of 4 points from the best the East has to offer, and now the best in the West come calling.

nationwide-arena

7:00pm EST Fox Sports Ohio (HD), NHL Network (HD)

For the first time this season the Blue Jackets were poised to have both Jan Hejda and Mike Commodore in the line-up for the first time in this young season, but alas, the injury bug has struck again:

The Jackets will be without Derick Brassard (hand), Mike Commodore (charley horse) and Kristian Huselius (upper body) for tonight’s game. Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said all three are likely to miss Thursday’s game as well.

Puck-rakers

It will surely put some pressure on the top line which will consist of Umberger-Vermette-Nash leaving Jake Voracek on the 2nd line and Nikita Filatov on line number 4. Not a lot of scoring to go around. Jan Hejda will make his return to the line-up and could provide the necessary boost to continue the CBJ’s recent improvement, but this time against the likes of Patrick Marleau, Joe Thorton and Evgeni Nabakov.

Statistical Comparison:

Columbus Power Play 22.8% (9th) vs. San Jose Penalty Kill 85.0% (6th)

San Jose Power Play 25.0% (6th) vs. Columbus Penalty Kill 79.3% (18th)

Talk about balanced on special teams. The Sharks can score with the man-advantage and sure don’t like to let the other team take advantage when down a man. The Blue Jackets PK should continue to improve with the return of Hejda as the on-ice leader, maybe even this will get Nash going with his early short-handed chances.

Columbus Goals/Game 3.23 (8th) vs. San Jose Goals Against/Game 2.47 (7th)

San Jose Goals/Game 3.40 (6th) vs. Columbus Goals Against/Game 3.46 (26th)

Again the Sharks are extremely balanced while the Jackets have been woeful on defense as of late.

It will take a total team effort to avoid a shark attack like what happened in game 3 this season. Time to see what the younger guys are made of and if Mase can build on his recent good performances.
