Resistance is Futile – JACKETS LOSE

gamescore6

Not much can be said at this point. While the Jackets are not yet eliminated, their play so far against a much more talented opponent does not give much reason for optimism. Detroit has significantly out-hit the Blue Jackets, allowing them to command the flow of the game even more than a team this talented would. Although no goals were scored by the CBJ on Saturday it could be argued that the Jackets played a more complete game, but so did the Wings, and therein lies the problem…

n12404291_47835881_7806751

The Red Wings have gotten every single bounce and call through two games of the series. Three of the eight goals scored by the Wings have been redirects off of a Blue Jackets player, and all of those have come at big moments in the games. Four of the eight goals scored by the Wings have come on the power play of which Detroit has received 14 opportunities to the Blue Jackets 7 chances (If my math is correct). The Jackets do tend to play a more wreckless-type of game, but having twice as many power play opportunities should raise some kind of red flag to the officiating of this series, and doesn’t help dispute the NHL’s bias against expansion teams/conspiracy to keep the Original 6 teams in the playoffs as long as possible.

To get things going at home the Blue Jackets need to play nearly mistake free. There can be no more sloppy passes, missed open nets, and someone besides Nash, Umberger, Voracek, Klesla, and Mason needs to have an outstanding game. The Red Wings are better, I’ll admit it, thats why it will take nothing less than a Herculean effort to right the ship on Tuesday night.

Speaking of Tuesday night, it has been circulating on message boards and blogs, but there is an unofficial call out to form a UNION OF BLUE, which means wear Blue! No White Jersey’s, no Scarlet and Gray, especially no Red jerseys, but wear your Blue Jersey’s, T-Shirt’s, whatever you have that is colored Union Blue, it needs to be worn. Please pass this on to anyone you know attending Tuesday’s game.

Playoffs Game 2 – DETROIT RED WINGS

det

Alrighty, game 2 is here, lets get it on. The Jackets need to jump on the Red Wings much like Thursday night, but a key part of it all will be converting chances instead of continuing to remain inept. I am expecting a considerable CBJ fan turnout, after what was somewhat disappointing on Thursday night. It’s Saturday and we’re playing the closest possible team in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, we better have a presence in Joe Louis Arena!

The Jackets could very well roll over and just brace for the storm in this one but this is a team that has what I think is too much pride and will not give up in their first playoff series. It will be very important for Columbus’ stars to generate scoring chances early and often, and to actually convert on them when the opportunity is there.

The three HUGE questions I have are 1: How will Steve Mason play after giving up 4 goals Thursday? and 2: Who will be the unexpected player to “save the day”? 3: Will we out-hit or match the Red Wings physicality?

Like a Boa Constrictor – JACKETS LOSE

gamescore5

All it took was watching the first period and it became inevitable. The Jackets were unable to match the intensity of the Red Wings after RJ Umberger tied the game at one a piece midway through the third, just after I was admiring the game was still scoreless ten minutes into the second period.

n12404291_47801017_6098334

After the quick answer by Umberger, the Wings straight up took control. The Jackets were blown off pucks, didn’t make good passes, and took dumb penalties giving the Wings all they needed to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.

There was still a glimmer of hope heading into the third, mostly because of the success the CBJ had during the regular season in the third period. But there were no heroics in Joe Louis Arena last night. The Wings had the lead, and you know what that means, squeezing the life out of the game… and that they did.

Game One goes to the wings, no question about it, they asserted themselves when the Jackets let their energy falter. They out-Jacket-ed the Blue Jackets. They hit more than I can ever remember, their forecheck created turnovers constantly, and they were EXTREMELY effective on defense limiting the boys in blue to 21 shots with only 2 coming in the ultra-critical third period. Chris Osgood was very good in the first period and didn’t have to do much the rest of the game. Mason was okay throughout and really bailed the impotent offense out a few times, but still gave up a season high against the Red Wings.

Playoffs Game 1 – Detroit Red Wings

227px-2009_stanley_cup_playoffssvgdet

There is not much else that can be said about the importance of this. Game 1 of the Series, First Ever Playoff game for the franchise, not to mention Nash, Mason, Russel, Voracek, Hejda, Methot, Boll, and Klesla… This match-up comes down to not only how well each goalie plays (Mason vs. Osgood) but also how well each teams defensemen bailout their goalie. If both teams play to potential this could be the first OT game of the 2009 Playoffs, which would be pretty awesome. If the play is unbalanced however, the score will follow suite I’m certain.

It would be great to get a win tonight in Game 1, on the road in Joe Louis Arena, which may not be quite so hostile. At this hour I’m still able to find groups of 4 tickets in Row 13 via the normal Ticketmaster purchase as well as the 300+ tickets available from season ticket holders via Ticketexchange. Sick.

For comparison sake, San Jose has none that I can find available through Ticketmaster, but over 500 through Ticketexchange. The Washington Capitals also have none available through TM but 652 through TXCHG. And the Penguins have none available through TM and 640 through TXCHG. I think this goes to show that things in Detroit are pretty rare because all of these other teams are selling out their arenas, just they have a fair amount of fans turning around and selling the tickets for profit online. In my opinion the self proclaimed title of “Hockeytown” should not belong to a franchise that doesn’t sell out home playoff games, round 1 or otherwise.

Let’s cheer the Jackets on so we can help remind the Red Wings and the Detroit faithful that just because its the first round, doesn’t mean it won’t count!

Too Much Waiting

  • I can only imagine what it would feel like to be one of the players right now. Nervous, but quietly confident… that’s my summation. The first ever playoff game offers quite a bit of pressure, but it actually could be easier on the psyche coming on the “road”… speaking of that. “Hockeytown” still has a considerable amount of tickets available through TicketExchange at this writing, 354 to be exact, and The Dispatch had a nice article related to this:

Seats are so available that Red Wings officials called the Jacket Backers — the team’s official fan club — and offered a group discount. A very bad Detroit-area economy also is hurting sales.

“Let’s be honest: They’re used to making the playoffs, and a first-round game’s not that much of a big deal to them,” said Andy Whitmer, a Jacket Backer known for wearing a big blue wig to games.

-The Dispatch

Hopefully the Jackets fans in attendance will have a lot to cheer about tomorrow night at ‘The Joe’

  • The team (and fans) received a little bit of bad news today when C Derick Brassard was told by his doctor that he could not return to full contact practice.

General manager Scott Howson is not sure when Brassard will see the doctor next. Howson hasn’t spoken to the doctor yet. If Brassard had been green-lighted, he might have been in as early as Game 3.

-Puck-Rakers

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I really like that almost all big-name sports outlets are not picking this series in favor of the Blue Jackets. I’m hoping that the players feed off of this combined with the play of Mason and the fact that they KNOW they can have success in Detroit.

P.S. My Stanley Cup finals Prediction is Chicago vs. Boston and Boston winning the cup in 6.

Call to Arms

There are plenty of seats available for Thursday’s FIRST EVER Blue Jackets Playoff game. As of 10:45PM on 4/13/09 these are the tickets available through Ticketmaster TicketExchange:

picture-2

This does not include any of the tickets that are still available through direct purchase on Ticketmaster.com Please don’t take any of this as an advertisement for TM, they hold a monopoly on the sports and entertainment ticket industry and charge ludicrous fees to purchase and use the “convenient service they provide”.

Back to my point. Thursday night will mark a significant night in sports history, specifically Columbus sports history and Mr. McConnell’s dream to see a playoff team bless our great city. There is a unique experience for fans of the Blue Jackets in the region to see the CBJ play in one of the two closest arena’s to our own, historic Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

For years the Red Wings fans have had a boisterous presence in our own Arena, now it is time to turn the tables on them. There is no doubt that the Wings have more skill on their roster, but the Jackets bring the energy of a young club, on their first run to the playoffs, and now is when our team needs us most. I’m not going to turn the other cheek to specific issues some of us may face, but we all need to do everything we can to help support OUR team. Chances are many of you did not get to purchase playoff tickets here at home and this is YOUR chance to make a statement.

This is what happens when the Jackets fans make a showing… the team responds. From all accounts by broadcasters and reporters, that game saw the largest contingent of CBJ Supporters in the history of the Jackets-Wings series. I’m not advocating that the Jackets will be able to manhandle the Red Wings like they did that night in March, but that a little bit of support on the road can go a long way.

Do your part, Carry the Flag to Detroit, Beat the Red Wings

Like a ton of bricks

picture-12

Well, the time has finally come and the Jackets will face a tough test in their first ever venture into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Jackets and Wings played to a 3-3 season series tie, which would theoretically mean this should be a GREAT series. Both teams have been of the “Hot/Cold” variety. The Wings are obviously the more skilled team with the outstanding offensive special teams, while the Jackets were well documented as the worst offensive special teams, but still find themselves playing for a chance to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup in a couple months.

stanley_cup_300px

It didn’t seem real until I saw this picture featured on Dispatch.com That’s the ice in Nationwide Arena, in Columbus Ohio getting the playoffs logo for the first time… wow. It kinda hit me like a ton of bricks, in a good way, when I saw this for the first time. Puck-rakers also had some nice informational tidbits today:

The Blue Jackets could have forward Fredrik Modin in the lineup as early as Game 1. Modin practiced yesterday and said his injured knee felt strong enough to play. Coach Ken Hitchcock was not divulging his lineup, but kept hinting the lineup the Red Wings see on Thursday night could be different than the one they are expecting.

Jackets forward Kristian Huselius also said he’s a go for the series opener.

The wild card is rookie center Derick Brassard. Brassard visits his Cleveland Clinic doctor on Wednesday hoping to receive medical clearance on his injured right shoulder. Assuming Brassard gets the green light — and there’s no guaranteed he does — don’t be surprised if he’s in the lineup for Game 3 in Columbus.

Other news yesterday was that former Blue Jacket Goaltender Frederik Norrena won the KHL Championship with his team across the pond in the Motherland.

One final note, The Pensblog launched an on-line NHL Playoffs Pick ‘em that is really nice, but even better its free, and even cooler than that they are raising funds for the Mario Lemieux Foundation more info here:

Game 82 – MINNESOTA WILD

min

Although the Wild are coming off of an 8-4 beat-down of Nashville, their season effectively ended last night with Anaheim’s shootout victory over the Stars. Hopefully the Jackets got the clunker out of their system last night and are ready to capture the 6th seed tonight.

Speaking of seeding, if the Jackets are unable to secure any points tonight, they will be at the mercy of 4 other teams. Anaheim plays at Phoenix tonight and St. Louis plays at Colorado tomorrow, if one of those 2 teams win the Jackets will fall to 7th place, or if both teams win, the Jackets would fall to 8th place. I think its safe to say that at least one of the two teams will win their match-ups over these waning moments of the regular season, so that Jackets really need to win tonight and lock-up a match-up with the #3 seed, either Vancouver or Calgary, which we should know before the puck drops tonight.

Puck-rakers reports that Peca will be out of the line-up tonight:

Veteran center Michael Peca will not play on fan appreciation night against the Wild.

“Day off,” coach Ken Hitchcock said when asked why Peca was out of the lineup.

Is he injured?

“Day off,” Hitchcock responded.

Are you happy with the way Peca is playing?

“Day off,” Hitchcock said.

There’s two ways to view it. Hitchcock is trying to hide an injury or he’s sending a message to his 35-year-old alternate captain. Interesting.

Not really sure what to make of it myself. Peca has been a force lately, so I lean towards this being a maintenance day for the aging center. There was no news about Filatov being in the line-up which comes as a surprise. In my opinion the CBJ really miss the skill that Huselius brings to the table, and subbing in grinders is obviously not the answer to the problem.

Tonight will be another sell-out for Nationwide Arena and will hopefully be a nice little celebration for the now playoff-bound Columbus Blue Jackets.
